Inishbofin [Inis bo finne:Island of the white cow] is an enchanted island 8 kilometres
off the west coast of Galway. It’s the perfect island for a getaway or to rediscover
nature. Long or short walks in this serene place can take in spectacular blowholes and
seal colonies.
On one such walk I experienced some of the unique flora of the island.
Dry stonewalls by the roadside are capped with dry earth where some colourful wild
flowers thrive. Here one can find golden bird’s foot trefoil, red saxifrage, yellow
stonecrop, and white oxeye daisy. A mild moist climate and the absence of artificial
fertilizer and herbicide make this an ideal habitat for such flowers.
