During heavy snow farmers provide supplementary feeding, as grass is not available.
Along the N60 I observed this picturesque landscape. Sheep are feeding on hay from
a metal feeder, which the farmer keeps topped up.
This scene will become rare in the
near future as progressive farmers now tend to house breeding ewes during the weeks
prior to and during lambing. Sheep sheds provide shelter for mothers and newborn
lambs and result in a much lower mortality rate. This system also favours the farmer
when he tends to his flock at night. Otherwise he would have to search throughout the
farm by torchlight to ensure the ewes got attention during lambing if needed.
