Roscommon Castle is located near Roscommon town centre off the Castlerea road. It was built by Robert de Ufford, Lord Justice of Ireland in 1269. Now in ruins, this dramatic and imposing 13th Century Norman Castle later passed into the hands of Hugh O Conor King of Connaught. Rectangular in plan with rounded bastions at the corners it has a double towered entrance. The castle is open to the public.
The beautiful Loughnaneane Park with walking trails and tranquil duck pond is adjacent to the castle. Strolling around those lovely grounds it is hard to imagine that this place witnessed much mayhem from attacks and burnings in former days.
“Cruinniu sa Chaislean” [A gathering in the castle] a spectacular festival event of music and culture took place in the intimate surroundings of the castle in August 2008 and 2009. It featured the best of local, national and international artists.
