GThe Galway Hooker is a traditional sailing boat used in Galway Bay off the west
coast of Ireland. This is a unique design variation, developed in the 18th century for
the unwieldy seas in this area.
It is easily identified by the sail formation, which is
extremely distinctive and beautiful. It consists of a single mast with a main sail and
two foresails. Traditionally the boat is black (being coated in pitch) and the sails are a
dark red brown.
The festival of “Cruinniu na mBád” (meeting of boats) is held every year when
Hookers race from Connemara to Kinvara on the Galway/Clare county border.
Roundstone Regatta is also an annual event when Hookers can be seen in a beautiful
and colourful display, in Roundstone Bay.
