The Lackagh is a short river about two miles long, flowing from Glen Lough to the
sea at Sheephaven Bay. A good fishing river, it is popular for spring salmon and wild
and brown trout. The word ‘’lackagh’’ means an abundance of flagstones. Some of
those flagstones can be seen along the bank of this river.
Nearby, Doe Castle, the ancient seat of the McSweeneys is situated at the mouth
of the Lackagh River. A legend tells of a romance between Aileen of the castle and
Turlough of the OBoyles. The families were enemies and the romance ended in
tragedy for the young lovers. It is said their ghosts can be seen rowing their boat on
the Lackagh River.
