On the west coast, the Cliffs of Moher are one of the most outstanding coastal features
of Ireland. They are located just south of the village of Doolin in Co Clare. They
ascend to over 700feet (213metres) stretching south for nearly five miles (8km) to
Hags Head.
OBrien’s Tower, which is included in this painting, stands proudly on a headland of
the majestic cliffs. It was built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O’Brien, a self proclaimed
descendant of the legendary High King Brian Boru, who wanted to capitalise on the
throngs of Victorian tourists coming to see the magnificent views.
The cliffs are almost vertical, and their sheer drop into the heaving Atlantic Ocean is a
haven for sea birds. These include Puffin, Razorbill, Chough and Common Gull. The
area is designated as a refuge for fauna and a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).
This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland.
